  2. As a Kindergarten teacher that started virtually, went to in person learning and no back virtually, we visit procedures daily. It provides repetition of our expectations and allows for consistency in our daily learning. Our scholars were prepared and are working much better virtually this time around. We have 43 on our roster, so expectations are super important to allow us to make the most out of our teaching time with scholars!!

I try to do my repetition in my daily "House Keeping" announcements. It is usually just a quick snapshot of things we have talked about recently. Repetition is important, but as my scholars are older I worry that they think I am just badgering them and that they ignore me.

    2. Ms. Macey,
I love the idea of starting each day revisiting routines and procedures. When I was in the classroom full time that is how we would start each day as well. We would have a morning meeting and state our rules and expectations for the day. Often times I would have the scholars share their goal(s) for the day. Then at the end of the day if time allowed we would revisit our goals for the day to see if we were able to reach them. Keep up the great work, sounds like you have a great thing going on.

I definitely feel that reteaching expectations and procedures is necessary. Especially right now as we find out what things do or do not work for us in virtual or hybrid style classes, those expectations and procedures may have changed throughout the first semester and may even be changing again now, so being clear about what you expect is important.

I suppose I did not focus on making it overly engaging and fun and instead focused on being honest. A lot of my scholars are asking when we are going back to school, and as covid numbers are still high in the area I try to be honest and say that we will hopefully be back later this month, but it all depends on the numbers and that even if we do go back they will be virtual at least every other week and therefore knowing how to do things virtually is very important for their overall success. My scholars (that attend class) have responded well to Kahoot! before, so perhaps making some type of Kahoot! game about the expectations would be more fun and engaging.

I used to use kahoot but feel that the game rewards speed more than accuracy. Have you tried quizziz? They can start at thier own pace and earn rewards or tokens based on correct answers not just fast answers.

    2. Because we read the class expectations daily, I did not spend too much time revisiting them. However, reading this I realize mine are not shared in a "much fun" way neither. Something to think about.

Kahoot would be a good idea to make things more fun... It actually reminded me that I added some expectation questions on the Friday quiz. Example: T/F- What is due each week can be found on the week by week summary found at the top of Blackboard.

  4. The start of this new semester is definitely a time to revisit expectations, procedures, and overall structure of course content. This week I am taking this time to do so. It gives students an opportunity to ease back in and digest things more thoroughly.
Because I am discovering new ways of teaching visual arts virtually, we are also using this week to practice assignment submissions, whether it be through email, web folders, or blackboard.
The language that I use is very intentional as I remind students that we are exploring these new ways of learning together and to not worry about failing. I constantly communicate my goal is to make virtual art exciting and to minimize the fear of failing.

I typically take the first week to research the expectations. At least go over them with the students. For reteaching skills, I personally like review games on quizziz.

    1. Ms. Jones, I find making a simple explanation regarding expectations upon welcoming Scholars in my group online is sufficient. I find simple games using the tools in Blackboard or coming up with riddles are a simple and cool way to engage and get them thinking on skills they need to review as well. Great concise post!

I actually do not take time to re-discuss my expectations. They are clearly outlined in the syllabus and I am not the type of person who changes these expectations even when I get comfortable with my students. (But I could totally understand this need for younger students, as I went back through expectations with my 6 year old before he started his eLearning this semester)

The day before classes were to start, I sent an email and text as well as posted an announcement reminding all students that we would be following the same schedule and classes would resume exactly as they were before the break. I also posted the weekly schedule, which I did last semester, so that all students could see that the expectations from week to week were still staying the same. Consistency and constant parent/student/teacher contact has worked well for me. After the first class, I sent a text to all students/parents individually saying one of three things:

    1) I am so glad I got to see you today! I'm looking forward to a great semester.

    2) I really missed you today. Just as a reminder, we are having live lectures Mon-Thurs (Friday is office hours). My zoom link is at the top of our Blackboard page. The times are as follows: 1st period- 8-8:30, 2nd period 8:40-9:10 3rd period 9:20-9:50, 4th period 10-10:30, 5th period 10:40-11:10, lunch 11:10-12:10, 6th period 12:20-12:50, 7th period 1:00-1:30. I hope to see you tomorrow if at all possible! Please feel free to text me at any time with questions, concerns, or just to say hello.

    3) Welcome to class. I am Dr. Lawrence (chemistry/ICP). I noticed you are new to my section this semester. I just wanted to say hello. I missed you in class today. 1. I think that consistency is the key to making anything work. When things are constantly changing students feel overwhelmed and shut down because they don't know what to expect. I have contacted parents about 3 times this week so far.

  7. I do not spend half the second semester on expectations. I believe they're very clear and outlined in the syllabus. I do spend the first week of return on expectations and letting scholars know "we have a fresh start". Letting them know they currently have an "A" in my class, and the best ways to maintain it. I encourage student interactions with how we're feeling, and getting their feedback on e-learning. Trying to make the best out of our new "norm".

I absolutely love Kahoot, but I am also a sucker for bingo. With rewards or extra credit points.

  8. Im not really spending the second semester on expectations. I'm still trying to get the kids to adapt to virtual learning..I believe in starting fresh everyday and we started student of the week, You earn points by coming logging in on time and participating.

I like the idea of having Student of the Week. What a great way to boost student moral. And soon enough we will be back in the school building :)

  9. Every day I review the expectations and visualize the goals that I must achieve. However, the most difficult thing is to keep students motivated and ready for virtual learning. Kahoot, quizz and quizlet are tools that I use during my class with various purposes, to know if they are meeting expectations, motivation and I use the data collected in the activities to make modifications to the teaching-learning process,

  10. Reteaching expectations with the Scholars I am servicing is not necessary. Each day a simple reminder is posted and viewed in my powerpoint. I always brief and say, "I know you all know how to conduct yourselves in my group." I tell them to have fun learning and follow along with me; and they do just that. Further, I try and find music or videos to help in reiterating skills in review. Typically, pacing, engaging Scholars and directly talking with them throughout has worked successfully. 11. I understand the necessity of having to reteach a concept. Th hard part is getting every student to engage so I can have a better understanding of how they are understanding the material. With our scholars being virtual I like to try to asses in a variety of ways. I like to use quizlet, kahoot, or just simple question in the chat box and have them private message me their answer. But getting every scholar to answer or log into the game is challenging.

  12. I spend a day on expectations and procedures when we come back for second semester. I remind them as we go and have them posted. I get students engaged by having them do their goal setting the first day back. This allows them to start thinking about what they want out of the semester and how to be accountable for it.

  14. Class expectation and procedures are important when it comes to making the class run as smoothly as passible. I made my class expectation and procedure a discussion. I ask scholars to respond to questions about them in writing in a their discussions.

  15. For my first grade students, it's important to reteach expectations. Especially as the scholars have spent much of the year e-learning. I like to be interactive with my students and let them remind each other of the classroom procedures when reteaching, giving out candy and stickers to encourage participation and reward good behavior. With COVID, mask and hand washing procedures are items I reinforce often.

All these sound like wonderful ways to get scholars onboard with learning the routines and procedures in your classroom. Good job and keep up the good work.

  16. Reteaching classroom expectations and procedures have always been something that I focus on after a vacation or when things are a bit wacky in the classroom. Yes, it may feel like it is taking a way from class instructional time, but it is only for a little while. While if one does not practice and reteach these routines and procedures than later in the school year you may be losing more time with more disruptions than one would have if they spent some time up front reteaching them.

One way that I have done this in the past is made a game of it. I had the scholars in groups and they had to come up with a fun way for us to remember how to do one of our routines or procedures. Another way that I had the scholars practice was with a poster. They had to come up with a procedure we do in class and with only using 5 words or less had to describe it on the poster board (Non-linguist representation).

  17. I enjoy reaffirming classroom expectations at the beginning of the year. With the teachers and scholars I have the opportunity to work with, we reaffirm our expectations every time we enter the virtual classroom. I've noticed fellow teachers have gotten students involved in the process and I have followed their lead.

So far things have gone well. We do need more participation and I try to help improve that. Otherwise, classroom expectations have been reaffirmed so far. Hope all is going well for all of you!

  18. I have spent time this second semester going over expectations, especially since this is a very different time for all of us. The multiple changes from virtual to in-person learning as well as the changes we have had with teachers can be confusing for our students. Reinforcing these expectations throughout each day is what keeps it consistent. An example would be: I am always reminding scholars when they have a question to first pause, raise a virtual hand, and wait until they are called on to turn on their mic to avoid disruptions.

Scholars love to draw on the virtual whiteboard. I will often times put a "Spin the Wheel" on the screen that will choose a scholar for me. It has music and lights which gets them excited to have their name chosen to participate on the screen. Eventually each scholar is engaged and participating.

  19. I spend time reteaching expectations after Christmas break. I use padlet to have scholars add expectations and acceptable and unacceptable behaviors as post it notes.

  20. I spend a lot of time at the beginning of the year going over expectations and I follow these expectations through out the year. I say I follow them because I do not get laxed on my expectations. When we came back from break, I think my students only needed a couple of reminders about raising hands and how to use the chat correctly. I think this is easier done with older kids because they remember expectations over breaks. The way I reinforce good behavior is by praising when it is done correctly every time.

  21. Procedures and expectations are something I work hard on in the beginning of the year, and I try to follow them all the time. I think it's a great idea to reteach in the middle of the year, and I do. Honestly, I'm reteaching them all the time, just with little reminders. I use positive reinforcement with procedures and call out on kids who are following them. This makes the others want to do it too.

  22. I really try to reteach procedures and expectations throughout the year, but after the holidays it is definitely a great time to do a refresher. I have done a “pass the ball” refresher game before and each scholar has to remind us of one of our procedures or expectations when they get the ball. It’s a fun way to review and they love anything where they get to throw and catch in the classroom!

  23. I think it is important to revisit the expectations when students return from winter break just to make sure that the expectations are clear and there is zero confusion moving forward with the second semester. I also do a refresher on the expectations because I often receive new students at the beginning of the second semester that may be new to the school. A few fun ways that you can review expectations is a treasure hunt, quizlet live, jeopardy, or an escape room. This will also allow students to socialize and work together.
