I have tried to make this school year as pleasing as possible by having dinner with my student, selling treats to earn money for the scholars in my class, and providing them with snacks during class so all year long. I will continue to do these thing until the school year ends.
ReplyDeleteThat's awesome that you have had dinner with you student. I have been providing snacks during class on and off all year long as well. I think keeping things consistent in your class is a great idea given the constant changes we have faced throughout the year.

I love some of these ideas that are listed for this post! In the past, I have done awards for my students, written individual messages in cards, and sent them off with parting gifts. Since I teach middle school, I typically give the 8th graders a graduation, but given the current situation with Covid this school year, I don't foresee that being a feasible option. We might have a party the last day of school and write messages to one another while reflecting on the school year.

DeleteWe have had candy, snacks, game days ect thorughout the year. The end will be no different. The 2 days following our finals, we will be doing Mentos explosions (with an extra credit paper) and a "Teach me day" where the scholars get to teach me something of their choice instead of me teaching them. I will also bring in snacks and things for them to have during the finals week.
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of writing letters to my scholars, especially because they are my first ever class! I also like the idea of an Oscar Event and giving out awards. I remember getting awards in grade school so hopefully that will be fun and stick with these scholars forever!

DeleteI am excited to see all of these suggestions and ideas. My favorite is the compliments from scholars to one another. This has been a very memorable year, and I would love for them to take positive memories and friendships with them from a year that has been difficult, scary, wonderful and exciting all at once.

ReplyDeleteAll of the end of the year activities look fantastic!! Being a Letterman guy I think that I will use the Top Ten List for the students, and I will also create a teacher Top Ten listing all the things that I will miss about them. Frederick E. Pittman H.I.A.T. 5th/6th Math & SS teacher.

ReplyDeleteI have been thinking about doing an end of the year reflection, but I have not decided yet if I will for sure do it. I teach a music elective course and a majority of the scholars in my class did not choose to be in the class. We also have not been able to sing or play wind instruments all year and only the in-person scholars now can really play any type of instrument.
I have tried all year to combine general music knowledge, like how to read music, and other things that I thought the scholars would be more interested in, like "birthday bios" for their favorite musicians. A prime example is their individual music lessons. I gave them full power to learn/study WHATEVER they wanted, as long as it was music related. I even said they could just learn more about their favorite musician. Most of the scholars just will not participate or even attend their music lessons.
I want to say, I know that I have a few scholars that truly enjoy my class, but because so many do not it does bring down the overall class experience and make it more challenging to try to move forward in our music skills. It has been a very frustrating year.
I really like the idea of sending my Kindergarteners to first grade with a personal laminated letter for their future reflection! I would love to include the poem "Everything you need to know, you learn in Kindergarten."

ReplyDeleteAn inspirational end of the year wrap-up activity is a great way for us to close out the year. I am thankful for this blog entry as a reminder to keep focused on the transformative nature of the school year for our scholars.
Of all the options, the memory celebration is one that I will definitely implement by the end of the year.

I've used many of these ideas in the past. However, I like the top ten list. My scholars are doing presentations of their projects for finals. Scholars are researching a career that they are interested in after taking a career survey and creating dream boards. I've had success with this project in the past and former students still talk about it when they see me again.

I really liked the idea of creating a 'Top Ten'. What a fun way to remember the school year. I feel like this time of the school year is kind of stressful and many of the positive things get overlooked by all the things left to do.
ReplyDeleteThis is not my first year teaching...So one way that we have celebrated the end of the school year in the past has been with a camping event. The past few years I worked in a really small school and the entire school would do Camp HLA. It would be the last week of the school year and we would create the school to be like Summer Camp. It was a lot of fun and the scholars looked forward to it every year.

I really love the idea of giving the student's a laminated letter. With covid this year, giving the student's a lasting keepsake of how much they've overcome. I do plan on decorating the classroom to celebrate the end of the year. I love the idea of filling it with balloons!

Most definitely Brianna, Hopefully they will respect and have new insights on "paper produced objects". Using paper for some Scholars is a new phenomenon to be re-introduced and leveraged in their schooling. This is a great way to do both! Great post.
DeleteI really like the end of reflections. This can be combined with the celebrations as well. This combination can be a celebration through sharing their reflections of the year. By doing this combination individual and class celebrations can coincide and, facilitate accessing their writing and grammar learned in a personal and creative way. Further, providing social emotional learning as a class community. Making every moment a teachable moment is critical. After a year of mainly virtual and hybrid learning there is no time to waste.

I like the idea of doing a top ten list. I also like the idea of doing an award show of some kind. When I close out a school year, I move toward more review and less new concepts. I also like to do a lot of projects and crafts to keep the kids engaged. I try to focus on having fun and exploring concepts we may have missed or wanted to explore further.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree. I am figuring out my end of the year projects now. It will be a challenge since most of my students are virtual and the face to face students have limited tech. But I am going to figure something out. lol
DeleteI am looking forward to the end of the year. But at the same time I am proud of this school year. I grew a lot as an educator and made some great connections with my scholars. We taught the hybrid model which allowed me to be super creative and allowed me to learn new things, I wasn't the most technological person. I am looking forward to next year where I hope I have more face to face students.
ReplyDeleteI will use the writing a letter to my students. My year has been up and down, like I am sure many others have. I want my scholars to remember me as caring for them and not just a rule maker or a person in the class. I probably won't be able to read it to them because I will get emotional but I will allow them to read it out loud. I do kickboard celebrations every month and I want to do a special one for the end of the year.
